To The Incoming Freshmen...

In school, we have been doing a cancer unit (I have no idea what the final product will be... oh well) and looked at a PSA on what people would say to their sixteen-year-old selves if they could go back. Now, I am not sixteen yet and won't be for awhile (I'm still not even old enough for my learners' permit). However, lately I have been remembering my *shudders* freshman year of high school.

Surely, ninth (and in some cases, tenth) grade shouldn't be that bad. But it was for me. Upcoming is a list of things I wish I knew when I was starting high school.

1. High school is not whatever you think it is.

Believe me on this one. It's not. I thought high school would be this amazing experience. I thought it would be fun. I thought I would suddenly get pretty and my chest would inflate (for the record, it did not). I thought I would be a junior varsity cheerleader at my local high school. I thought I would be in every honors' class offered, with an A in every one of them. I thought I would get a super cute boyfriend and be on homecoming court. I thought I would be the all-around perfect high school student.

Here's what actually happened. It wasn't fun, first of all. I look the same as I did in elementary school. Cheerleading was inconvenient for my schedule. My school only offered two honors' courses for my grade, and I wasn't dumb enough to take honors' Algebra and Physics when those were my weakest subjects. I didn't get a 4.0. I was single the whole year (still single, but I don't care as much as I used to). I did manage to win for homecoming, but it was just a popularity thing... a waste, in my opinion.

On the contrary, high school is not the Netherworld, either. It can be great. This year, I almost kind of like it. But if you think it will be easy or perfect, you're wrong. Which leads me to my next point.

2. High school is NOT like middle school.

Obvious, huh? Actually, no. I had this delusion that since I pulled off near perfect grades in middle school, all I had to do was make a few tweaks and TA-DA! I would have a perfect GPA. But little did I know I needed to work a lot harder if I wanted to get good grades in high school. I've always been a hard-worker, but I didn't know what to expect, and I fell hard. I had to completely change the way I studied, and by the time I finally figured it out, one semester had already passed. Don't be like me. Start changing your study habits now.

3. If freshman year is bad, it's not the end.

My previous paragraph may have scared you, but it wasn't meant to. It is scary knowing colleges are going to look at your grades, but they understand that freshman year is a disaster for a lot of people. Many people don't get their act together until they're a sophomore or junior. There is a back-up plan-- show that the dip in grades was short-lived. For example...

As a freshman, I get a 3.0. (these are not my actual averages)
As a sophomore, I get a 3.2.
As a junior, I get a 3.6.
As a senior, I get a 3.8.

If I show that my grades are steadily increasing, the admissions officers will know that I am a hard-worker, and when my grades aren't great, it means I really am struggling. Also, see how the GPA dramatically gets higher as a junior? That shows that I finally learned how I work best, and when I go to college, they can expect me to perform at that range. And I got a 3.8 as a senior? For all they know, that might become a 4.0 in college.

Also, if you were sick (not like you had a two-week cold... I'm talking battling cancer, severe infections, surgery, etc.), your counselor can attach a note explaining what happened to your application. But if you mostly got As, and one year you got a few Bs, you'll be okay.

4. You're not that special.

Yikes. Sounds harsh. But let's nip this in the bud. It's easy to believe you may be more special than the next guy because you're planning on going to Yale University and you were on the Varsity softball team as a freshman and you placed first with your academic quiz team and you won the science fair and you speak three languages and you're in AP classes and you have a steady job (and boyfriend) and you do community service at your library and your first words were Sound of Music lyrics-- I get it. A whole lot of 'ands'.

But everyone is trying just as hard as you... for the most part, if not harder. So, you're no different. You're just at a different point on the same path. I wanna go to Northwestern University, but some of my friends try just as hard (and harder) as I do to get into our local university, which isn't competitive in the least.

So, don't put others down if they aren't in your AP Mandarin class. Don't think they're stupid because you want to be an engineer and they want to be an actor (very unstable, but they won't change their mind). Don't comment on how their dreams are unreasonable. You don't know them, you're not going to change their mind, and they will prove you wrong.

5. We are all cut out for different things.

It's okay if you aren't in AP Geometry (it's really okay... I'm not either). Don't force it. If you're into liberal arts, don't take extra difficult math classes just because it'll look good. If you're bad at it, it will show. And believe me, not taking that engineering elective will look much better than getting a D. Don't be sad if your friends are so-called smarter than you, either. This is (honestly) something I have struggled with. All of my friends have amazing abilities-- varsity swimming and softball, perfect grades, good communication skills, etc. Sometimes I would just be like, "Why do they even pay attention to me? I'm nothing special... rather embarrassing, really." I'm not cut out for math and science. Big deal. No one would actually shun me for that, even though my school specializes in that stuff. It was all in my head. This reminds me of Armin Arlert's Attack on Titan quote:

"It was just me convincing myself. Convincing myself that I was powerless and a burden... that thought never crossed their minds at all!"

No one's gonna judge you if you don't play any sports or take AP courses. If they do, you don't need them, anyway. Let the admissions officers judge you, because your peers love you for who you are. After all, we can't all be arms in a body.

6. You may find who you are.

Many people go into college not knowing their major, and that's okay. However, you can experiment in high school, too. Use your strengths. Do what you love. Take that creative writing class your friends don't want to take. Audition for the lead role in the school play. Join the anime club. If you're happy, you'll find that you might start to enjoy going to school.

7. Don't settle for less.

So, you want to play Simba in The Lion King but your dad wants you to join his law firm when you're older. That's a steady job. Why not? Do what you actually want to do. Being a lawyer will pay you much more than acting on Broadway for one season. But will you truly be happy working at a desk if you'd rather be on stage? Go after what you truly love. Have a back-up plan, but don't throw away your dreams, even if the world tells you to.

8. Don't be stupid.

I'm not talking getting a C in that Psychology class. I'm talking about all kinds of stupid. There's the I-don't-like-the-teacher-so-let's-fail-their-class kind of stupid (er, immature). There's the I-don't-wanna-do-my-homework-so-I-won't kind of stupid (again, immature). There's the let's-post-about-my-house-arrest-sentence-on-Facebook kind of stupid (yes, I've seen this one. Her posts were very entertaining, though). There's the let's-show-the-world-my-underage-drinking-problem kind of stupid (same girl... probably why she was on house arrest). If you'll regret it when it's time to apply, just don't.

9. Do not be absent.

Once you've gotten in the habit of skipping school over a case of the sniffles, there is no turning back. If you are miserable, stay home. But really-- all the make-up work is exhausting and kills your grades. Try your hardest to be at school.

10. It's all about your mindset.

You can do this. High school sounds scary, and the horror stories are endless. But if you truly believe, you can do anything you set your mind to. If you work hard, there will be results, even if they are small. It will be worth it, if you just believe. You've only got four years left-- go out with a bang!

Music for Back-to-School

School starts this week on Thursday (sigh). As much as this summer bored me, I'm gonna miss it and Louisville.

Sorry about my last post by the way. I was using a computer in the Exhibit Hall and my youth group wanted to go somewhere. And as I mentioned, I didn't get a callback (but come on. Was I really even expecting one?). There are hundreds of Pentecostal female vocalists in the United States. I'm so proud of myself and my group for making it up to this level--- going against the best AG talents in the entire USA. Representing Ohio was pretty amazing, and I can't wait to go back to Louisville in three years for a college visit! And I can't wait to go to Orlando next year for Fine Arts again if I make it for my drama, vocal solo, possible string solo based on progress, and human video (but only if I'm forced to do it--- I don't really want to and I want someone else to take my place, but Drew keeps saying "It's ministry, Hope" and it makes me all like, "GAAAAH! What should I do?") and other things.

So, I updated my iPoid for Fine Arts and here's that, plus more of my FAF and school faves!

  1. "Home" by Phillip Phillips was played during the Olympics this year. Perfect end of summer song, I know. I wish I had it when I left for Nationals, but Faith bought it while I was gone. It's time to "make this place your home" and enjoy your last few years in elementary/middle/high school/college!
  2. "Keep Your Eyes Open" by NEEDTOBREATHE. I love that southern voice this band has. Keep your eyes open, guys. Anything can happen here.
  3. "With Everything (Live)" by Hillsong UNITED is great to get you really worshipping on the weekends or to listen to on the way to school for you guys who want to be campus missionaries this year. God can do amazing things in our schools, believe me!
  4. "Moving Mountains." Jeff Deyo is a music teacher at North Central University, a school at which I know a few people that are currently attending and one that graduated from NCU's music program and is now a creative arts pastor. This guy is epic, and you can download this song free for only a limited time here.
  5. "Steady My Heart" by Kari Jobe is a great... I don't know. It answers a lot of things for me.
  6. "We Are" by Kari Jobe can really help if you feel discouraged in this whole campus missionary thing.
  7. "Find You On My Knees" by Kari Jobe. Just take a rest from homework and just worship. It will change your attitude on everything. Try it.
  8. "Love Came Down" by Kari Jobe--- sorry. I'm just really enjoying this free Kari Jobe album I got from the editor-in-chief of ONCOURSE magazine (Amber Weigand-Buckley) at a workshop in Louisville. It felt like a real college experience. The classroom feel, being in a conference theatre, taking notes, everything.
  9. "Begin Again" by Measure. This song has some amazing quotes in it--- no kidding. If you feel bullied or like you just need a second chance, this song will uplift you by a lot. "Begin again. Don't waste your time waiting for someone to tell you when... Morning still comes... Move around your furniture or put it all out on the curb and drive away to something new and watch the skyline sink behind you...  Walking out doors only works if you shut them... Quit looking backwards and know where you have been... Begin again. Don't waste your time, 'cause no one's gonna tell you when."
  10. "I am the Doctor" by Murray Gold. It will mkae you feel epic the second you walk in dat building.
  11. "Superhuman Touch" by Athlete because, well, you can stop the world with "just a wave of your hand" because you're amazing.
  12. School's not back in without "Over My Head" by The Fray. It's just not.
  13. "Wide Awake" by Katy Perry. "I wish I knew then what I know now." Totally describes how I feel about last school year.
  14. "I'll Make a Man Out of You" by Donny Osmond is perfect if you're tkaing gym class this year. You might also need the Gym Class Heroes to save you.
  15. "Anywhere Place" by Katie Costello. It can be hard finding your place in high school... but just know that you will.
  16. "Lay Your Head" by Athlete. Maybe this is a sign that you need to go to bed early?
  17. "Happily Ever After" by He Is We. This is what I think of seventh-grade couples. "We all wanna know how it ends."
  18. "Go to the River" by Yael Naim. Just "go, go, go, go."
  19. "Safe" by Britt Nicole. "You keep trying to get inside my head while I keep trying to lose the words you said. Can't you see I'm hanging by thread...?"
  20. Who is my vision? "You Are My Vision!" Who doesn't love Rend Collective Experiment's version of this hymn?
  21. "World News" by the Local Natives. Perfect for anger management.
  22. "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato. Don't let people tear you down, because that's fear of man. We're living for fear of God!
  23. "Don't Let it Break Your Heart," guys! However, my heart is breaking about Coldplay not playing in the London closing ceremony.
  24. "Birds" by Deas Vail. "We are all birds stuck inside our cage, covered up with praise, and behind our saints we hide our face."
  25. "Behind the Scenes" by Francesca Battistelli. "Things aren't always what they seem."
  26. "Sixteen" by Deas Vail. Makes me feel so young even though I'm not even sixteen yet!
  27. "Summer Forgets Me" by Deas Vail. Face it. Summer's over.
  28. Jesus, "let my life be the proof, the proof of Your love!" Gotta love For KING & COUNTRY. This song is totally my prayer.
  29. "Cubism Dream' by the Local Natives. Story of my non-existent love life, LoL!
  30. Show everyone that you're "Born Again" this year! "Born Again" by The Newsboys is pretty nice.
  31. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Relient K. Nuff said.
  32. "Build Your Kingdom Here" by Rend Collective Experiment. "Come set our hearts ablaze with hope."
  33. "Christ Has Set Me Free," (Rend Collective) so I want everyone to know, you know?
  34. "Don't You Know You're Beautiful" by Seabird. I have a friend who will only play this song when she has my iPod in her possession. Not Hans Zimmer, not Paramore, not Deas Vail, not Jason Walker, not Athlete. Just this song.
  35. "Echo" by Jason Walker. Hey, you. You ain't alone.
Yeah, this is what I do with my life, guys...

Simple Art of Plate Tectonics Draft #2

Sorry if I'm boring you guys, but again I am still in for like, another nine days:(
~~~~~~~~~~
Why are there volcanoes, you may ask?
Scattered across the land and sea?
Underwater,
Above the surface
With magma chambers
Like a fiery furnace?
And why are there earthquakes,
That shake the earth beneath
And why do they happen
Thousands of feet deep?
It's called plate tectonics.
Somewhere far below they're moving
And they're moving apart,
Together,
Next to
Each other.
They make mountains and trenches
They cause earthquakes and eruptions
And much, much more.
There are many things the plates are responsible for
But let's start with the theory of continental drift.
As fast as your fingernails grow
The plates move
Over a long period of time.
They were together
But it couldn't last forever
And in time they split.
The place called PANGAEASplit into the world today
So now we're left with fossils
In places they normally wouldn't be
Leading us to this conclusion in this way.
So this leads us to the ocean
Where all this evidence can be seen
Where the ranges are new and the trenches are old.
The new crust forms mountains
The old crust subducts
And this is the movement that causes the continents to drift.
They have to keep moving to keep growing
And that's the process of seafloor spreading.
How is this possible and how are they moving?
It takes heat
A convection current
With energy to release.
Igneous rocks: Formed through cooling and solidification of lava.
Metamorphic rocks: Formed from intense pressure and heat.
Sedimentary rocks: Formed under heat and is a combination of many rocks.
So now we're in our final lesson.
What more is there to learn?
You learned on Page 4 that the plates move in different directions.
You learned that the plates make mountains and trenches, earthquakes and islands.
But How?
At a convergent boundary, you may find mountain ranges, maybe even volcanic ones!
At a divergent boundary, you may find trenches.
At a transform boundary, also known as a strike-slip fault, you may find earthquakes.
Earthquakes can happen anywhere, near any plate boundary. Why? Because any time the plates move, it causes earthquakes. And since they are constantly moving, if you live in Japan or Hawaii or somewhere else near a boundary, you will experience a lot of seismic activity.
What is seismic activity?
An earthquake, tremor, or tremblor that is a result of a sudden release of energy in the earth's crust.
Mountain ranges are beautiful and cna be found almost anywhere.
They can even be found underwater, when oceanic plates collide to make mountian ranges.
Trenches happen when plates subduct.
That's why the ocean floor is younger than the continental crust, because it goes down, melts, and forms again.
The Simple Art of Plate Tectonics
I am sorry if this bores you, but there is a font that I can only find on Blogger that I need for a school project. Yes, I'm still in school. No judging.
Simple Summer Day
My mind is cleared of worries
I can put my soul at rest
Only temporarily, of course
But this feeling is the best.
It's a simple summer day
In Ohio,
Today
And it's just me and the river
The forest
The sun
And a few close friends
A time of year when everyone's a bohemian---
Floral dresses, shirts, skirts
Flowers in their hair.
I love the feeling of belonging.
Then there's freedom.
No:
"Remember to check ProgressBook"
"You're gonna be late for your bus"
"I'm too busy"
It's just the life I've wanted to live all year.
I get to do everything I've wanted to:
Out of school,
Violin lessons,
Learn new guitar chords,
Play my piano
Admire my bass
Practice my vocal solo for Nationals
Summer camp
County fair
Legendary funnel cakes
And swimming in my friend's pool.
I don't have to deal with snobs for another whole three months and I finally have time to focus on what really matters to me.
I can't think of a better feeling,
But then again,
That's just me:)
It's Prom Season:)
It's prom season in Ohio this spring:)
So excited! My sister got a date for her senior prom, my other sister is a sophomore but since our school is so tiny she's allowed to go to prom (doesn't matter... she still doesn't wanna go... our school only goes up to grade eleven, while Charity attends a separate school), and then as for me...
The middle school formal spring dance is tomorrow! I'm soooo excited! Saturday, if not tomorrow, I will be posting original images (with my signature: crappy photography!) on what to wear to formal dances and proms and homecomings. You just don't even know...
My dress is REALLY cute!!! I feel rich when I say this: It cost me $78.00. Well... alright, it was on Clearance at Kohl's for $25.00 (I think that includes sales tax). But still, it originally was $78. Golee, can't a girl be happy she got a pretty dress for a pretty price anymore?
It's purple and black. I got a black ring, a black-and-white flower, a silver bracelet, a black shrug, and black heels. I will be painting my toenails black, with artificial fingernails. I'm kinda nervous... I've never used nail glue before.
But I am SOOOOOO excited! Like, seriously! I already have my dance tips figured out!I can't wait to post them! A few weeks ago I wrote out a prom/homecoming/dance checklist. So I'll leak one tip.
1. Buy a dress.
See ya! LoL!
Wake Up, America!
Alright, if there's one thing Bob marley taught me, it's to "Get up, stand up... stand up for your right." Today in school, I learned to do just that.
And by the way, this post is not targetted toward a younger audience. If you are below the age of twelve, I do not recommend reading this post. It's not bad stuff, but it is talking about some serious problems that are going on in the world today, and I'm not editting it to where it's completely safe for all ages this time. So if you are under twelve, there are fluffier posts on here to read (wow, I feel like Lemony Snicket right now...). Like my post about genetics that will help you pass eighth grade biology when you're in that grade (and did I mention I think I passed today's Bio test because of this song??? AHHH!!!).
So, it's time to wake up, America, because we've been asleep for far too long. This post will be talking about how our country is slowly following a dark path... and a darker path... but how there are still pieces of hope, and how we are getting closer and closer to that day...
Bummed.
I decided I'd give you a small update on my school life for the first time using my brand new computer.
Let's just say this: no one wants to be suspended, have a sister who is a senior in high school, or have a mom who just had a baby when a field trip (overnight!) to DC comes along. But it happens. And it did happen to four kids in my half of the grade, which sadly, one of which is me (but I'm not the one that got suspended!!!).
Suspension.
I will not go into detail about this, because, um, two students were suspended and if they read that I told you what happened, they will kill me--- one of them is a black belt in Martial Arts, and I don't wanna mess with that. But they were suspended and school policy is, if you're suspended, no matter what time of the year it is, you are NOT going on any overnight field trips. Which makes me kinda sad, because, one of the kids that was suspended was REALLY excited about the trip, and REALLY wanted to go. But oh well. Bad decisions call for bad outcomes.
Graduation.
This one is about me (waaaaah!). My sister, Charity, will be graduating high school on June 10th. Yay! I get my own room, and I'm gonna end up with the bigger room because Faith wants the smaller room for some odd reason so that means more room for my music equipment (a standing bass, keyboard, guitar, karaoke machine to record vocals, only-sounds-you-hear-are-your-music headphones, and oh, my iPod and stereo, plus an electric guitar I'll buy and an amp). But that also means we leave DC the same day of her graduation and we don't get back until 10 p.m. I was really upset when I heard about that, because, don't get me wrong: graduations are kinda boring. But this is my sister we're talking about--- I can't miss my own sister's graduation! I have already missed half of her choir concerts this year, and I'm a little upset about that because this year she's in the Varsity choir, and they're always fun to watch! And last year I only attended one of her tennis matches. Never went to even one track meet or practice. So yeah. And she went to all of my gymnastics meets except for one, all my cheerleading/basketball games because they had food there, and maybe one or two volleyball games. So I have to go to her graduation. If I don't, that's just unacceptable. She went to everything... except for State and National Fine Arts, ha. I went to a lot of her activities, but that was before STEM happened. Before I started going to my area's STEM school (can't say its full name... no time for stalkers). Now, I'm loaded with homework and don't have the time... I had never missed any of Charity's choir concerts since she was a sophomore. And now she's in her final year of high school and I haven't showed up to anything... I'm basically counting down the days to summer... and dreading the days everyone will be at the field trip, except for, hmm, ME, and the kids listed above.
New "BABY BABY BABY OHHHHH!!!!" in the house?
Okay. Me? New baby? Um, not today. But, there is a new baby in someone's house. In fact there are two new babies. The first baby was from a different family that goes to my church. Their baby was born on, guess what day, JANUARY 1ST! They have a New Year's baby! So, everyone's gonna be staying up until 12 a.m. for the ball to drop... staying up until 12.a.m. for her birthday! Then the next family has a kid that has the exact same schedule as me, except for on Wednesdays. We were talking about the field trip and I was complaining about how I can't go because my sister just HAS to graduate this year. What happened to the girl who was a freshman when this blog first started? Well she grew up, so now I probably have to forfeit a trip that I really want to go to. But oh well, I know I'm not the only one--- one kid probably won't go because his mom just had a baby and she needs help with the new baby. So yeah.
So, let's pray we can all (except for the ones that got suspended. Sorry, but you knew what you were doing and you know who you are) make the trip. Wayne, can you guys like, um, completely post-pon your graduation ceremony??? How about the eleventh? That sounds like a good date! But oh well, go on, let me suffer.
May the odds be ever in your favor even though they're not in mine,
Hope!
You Know... It's Called... GENETICS!
I know the singer has some serious anger-management problems. But bear with me. I had to hear this song in science yesterday.
So, we were watching "Bill Nye the Science Guy" and this song came on. First of all, I tried not to laugh when hearing the show's theme song which literally yells, "Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!" I think it's evident that that's from the '90s. And you wanna know why I was keeping myself from laughing?
I know. It gets worse. Now you know what I meant by trying not to laugh at "Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!"
So, I peeped out a couple laughs while Steve, who sits next to me at our two-person desk, wasn't laughing. I figured I was just being immature. (MAKE SURE TO PAUSE THE VIDEO AT 0:37... IT'S HILARIOUS!)
So I got through the majority of the show and ended up laying my head in my arms, pretty much sleeping. And then I hear...
Danny has a brown-haired father.
And Danny has a brown-haired mother.
Turns out Danny has brown hair too,
That was the most likely color.
Mary has a blue-eyed father.
And Mary has a blue-eyed mother.
Turns out Mary has blue eyes too,
That was the most likely color.
Mary and Danny had a baby.
So now I'm wondering if maybe
Since Danny's hair is curly, but Mary's is straight---
THE BABY'S HAIR WILL BE WAVY!!!!!
You know
It's called
GENETICS!
You know
It's called
GENETICS!
THE DNA MAKES YOU WHAT YOU ARE,
*SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM*
IT'S A RECIPE FOR WHAT YOU WILL BE,
WHEN YOU TAKE A LOOK
*HMM HMM HMM HMM HMM*
Yeah... I looked up from my slumber and was like, "What the...????" (I did not blank out a cuss word, I just didn't finish my sentence.) Then, I heard Steve start laughing and then I started laughing and even ended up crying!
So yeah... me and a couple kids wanna cover this song... I call dibs on the "baby's hair will be wavy" part!
If I don't pass the science test, something's definitely wrong.
Christmas Lights: Bring It On!
Christmas spirit... if it were an Olympic sport, I'd be out for the gold medal. And at my school, there are some weird kids. That means crazy competition. For Christmas spirit.
Nobody is as creative as I am. Making personalized Christmas letters for everybody in my half of the eighth grade, singing even while angry, asking everyone what their favorite color is. Who would have thought I'd have competition.
This seventh grader had the nerve to be awesome and do something different. Something cooler than I knew was possible.
So, picture me, just walking to my cubby as I see... Christmas lights. "What the heck?" I thought, thinking maybe I was still groggy from the bus ride. So I walk back to Cal's (not full name) cubby and there it is, Christmas lights LINING HER CUBBY. What the heck, I know. I didn't even know it was possible to put Christmas lights--- that HANG ON HOUSES---in a school cubby. But it is. She attached it to a battery somehow... she must be in robotics or something. I thought it was ingenius. And did I mention she had a photograph of herself hanging off the lights? Almost like she was saying, "Beat THAT, Hope!" So, I confronted her at lunch about my discovery.
I asked her if she'd be alright if I had tried to outdo her holiday spirit. And ha ha... SHE SAID YES! We have similar personalities (I know her because I interviewed her for a project where we could interview some of the younger kids), and great minds think alike. We're both extremely creative, so I'm almost scared about where this could be leading. Let's just say...
Two girls enter the games. Only one will survive to tell the story.
And right now... I don't know if the survivor is me. This girl is serious about Christmas. But so am I. So here's what I say.
Dear Cal,
You may have Christmas lights and I may not be talented enough to do that, but guess whose idea it is to put a Christmas tree in her cubby? And snow? And snowmen? These are the Christmas games, and every addition to the spirit must be better than the last. Else, you're setting yourself up for some serious drama. Can you handle the heat? Or, should I say, snow? You'd better hope so.
Let the flames begin.
We Are Hungry...
No, I am not talking about that one worship song ("We are hungry, we are hungry, we are hungry for more of You. We are thirsty, oh Jesus..."). I'm really talking about food. I love food so much I asked for it for Christmas... help me.
Ever been so hungry, it was your last class period before lunch, and your stomach kept reminding you? That was me in STEM Foundations today. We didn't have advisory, so we were in class ten minutes longer. And guys, don't get me wrong, I love that class, but it drags on and on and on and on ("On and On" by Chasen = totally describes that class), maybe because it's my third period class which is normally right before lunch, unless I have Debate Team, then that makes thirty more minutes before lunch on Wednesdays.
So, I'm listening to some lecture on filmography, and this conversation started:
STOMACH: Me hungry. (plus: disgusting growl)
HOPE: Shh.
STOMACH: Me hungry... (growling again)
HOPE: Be quiet.
STOMACH: Hope, I'm hungry. (louder growl)
HOPE: Just wait five minutes until lunch...
STOMACH: Hope, you said "five minutes" five minutes ago... (bigger, louder growl)
HOPE: Aw dude, I hope no one in front of me hears this...
STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE (my very short friend): *Giggles*
HOPE: Brianna (Strawberry's real name), you didn't hear my stomach, did you?
STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE: *Hysterically laughing while nodding head, hoping no teachers will walk by, trying to be as quiet as what is possible*
HOPE: Come on clock, can you move any slower?
STOMACH: Me hungry!!! (LOOOOUUUD growl)
HOPE: Okay, seriously, stop it now.
STOMACH: FEED ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (loudest growl that went on for like, ten seconds)
HOPE: SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah.... that was embarrassing. So like, I brought it up in sixth period today and me and Strawberry Shortcake were laughing and were like, "Me hungry! Feed me!" Not only was the growling embarrassing, but you didn't hear it... it sounded like I had freakin' diarrhea for Pete's sake! I didn't have diarrhea, but still... sounds are deceiving--- especially when they last for ten seconds! I mean, guys, it was nasty sounding. Living grodyness.
So, ladies, here's a tip: If you're hungry, don't sit behind your crush. I wasn't sitting behind a guy I like because I don't like any right now, but he is a friend of mine (Mister Crow) and already has weird suspicions about my odd stomach noises because one day in sixth period, I didn't eat a lot that day unless you count loads of ketchup on a chicken sandwich. Maybe that's a normal amount of food, but I'm one of those girls that has to sneak a snack into every class period... except for science. So, I had a headache and had my hand covering one eye, plus I started falling asleep for the second time that day. Then, my stomach was like, "Me hungry! You haven't fed me all day, you moron!" And he turned around. He kinda stared awkwardly for a moment as if he was hoping that noise wasn't me. And I was sitting there, hoping no one else heard that noise. Guys, I have one mean stomach that knows how to embarrass me. "Hope, are you feeling okay?" He asked. Second person to do that all day. The first time though... it was something different... I fell asleep in STEM Foundations.
If you hear a loud, thunder-like noise anywhere, it's probably my stomach...
My Excuses for Not Blogging
Hey my bloggies! I have missed you guys so much! So, you may have already guessed why I was gone for so long because you probably already know. "Grades got you down?" Yes. "Love got you down?" Yes, yes, yes. BUT! I got the grades up, but sadly, my mom said no about joining the worship team this week because of how low my math grade was. Right before the end of the quarter, I just barely raised it to a C. In Social Studies I'm really good, but I just had to lose my binder that had all my assignments in it right before the end of the quarter. Seriously, guys... seriously? But don't worry, that's under control, too. Now I've got As, Bs, and Cs! Success!
Lately, life has been so competitive, like... I'm always running after something. Always trying to get there before someone else. I got Coldplay's "Mylo Xyloto" album the day it came out---again, success---and there's a song on it called "Major Minus" (I'm learning it on guitar by the way). It's a really fun song, sharp on the acoustic guitar, and here's some of the lyrics:
"They got one eye watching you
One eye on what you do
So be careful who it is you're talking to.
They got one eye watching you
One eye on what you do
So be careful what it is you're trying to do.
And be careful when you're walking into view.
Just be careful when you're walking into view.
OOH OOH OOH! OOH OOH OOH OOOH!
Got one eye on the road and one on YOU!
OOH OOH OOH! OOH OOH OOH OOOH!
Got one eye on the road and one on..."
Well that's me. Whenever I'm in competitive mode, it's BAD. I can't focus. And if I'm competing against you, oh boy, I'd hate to be you. At first I try to hide that we both want the same thing and I want it before you can reach it. Then I realize I don't like you. Then I try to hide that I don't like you. Then I realize that I don't care how you feel if I don't like you. Then I REALLY don't like you. Then I get the signs that you have a problem with me. Then I don't care about that either because that means I can openly have a problem with you. Then I get mean. So, "Major Minus" says one thing about me:
If we want the same thing and I see that you're a real opponent, I work my hardest to get up there, but I also have an eye on your progress. I've "got one eye on the road and one on you."
So yeah. That's my school life right now. Which is not so fun, because then, I go home to hear my dad yell, "HOMEWORK! DO YOUR HOMEWORK! HOPE, I KNOW YOU HEAR ME! I KNOW YOU HATE MATH (editor's note: Then he brings up how he hated math and ended up having a job centered around it)! YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT ONE DAY! I DON'T KNOW NO NEWS REPORTER WITH A BACHELOR OF ARTS THAT DIDN'T TAKE MATH IN COLLEGE! DEAL WITH IT!" And then after the math lecture I have to actually do the work, and by then it's eleven at night, and then I still have to take a shower, and then I still have a little bit of homework to finish, and by then it's at least 11:30 before I realize I haven't written a page of "Unspoken" or "On Death's Edge," I haven't thought up a single poem, I haven't looked up any new songs, I haven't dared to touch my guitar, and the blog has not been updated. And by then my mom is making me go to sleep, saying I'll be too tired in the morn.
Is that a legitimate reason for not blogging?
There's a Paralyzing Quiet Like Sirens...
Okay, I am almost a week late, y'all. BUT! I was just so excited and kept forgetting to post about this: I WAS APART OF THE FIRST 100 TO PRE-ORDER DEAS VAIL'S NEW ALBUM!!!!! Which means, I was also a part of the first 100 to purchase the album, period. I think I was the eighty-something person to do so.
Well, school was alright. I got caught talking in science class (I was talking about our homework, though... it wasn't that bad, and I was whispering... kinda loudly, but still, I was whispering). I think I'm gonna fail the math test. Otherwise, today was good. My grades went up. I don't know how I'm surviving in math. I'm living on a prayer in that class (absolutely no pun intended... okay, there was pun intended).
SO! Back to the CD! Here's their entire album for you to listen to. If you haven't been paying attention to the bazillion Deas Vail posts I have written, you should know that you are guaranteed to like their music unless you like that cheap American pop stuff. Deas Vail is an indie rock band, but their genre of rock is a very, very soft rock. Some of their songs are a little pop-ish (ever heard "Growing Pains"?). They have some harder songs, like my favorites: "Surface" and "Life In These Little Boats". But if you love music, you love Deas Vail.
If you've been reading this blog for awhile, here's one word that you're familiar with: "Excuses". You know that I was in the Fine Arts Festival earlier this year. And you know that performing this song, in which I sang harmony, sent my group to Nationals. You know (or did I not tell you?) that we placed second in Ohio. And you know that that song is the reason why I am in love with Deas Vail. So let's get it started!
"Desire", Track 1, is amazing. A little repetitive, yes, (oh no, I'm critiquing it with the black hat! My art teacher is gonna love me!) but great. It was my favorite song on the album for a long time, but then I started exploring the album and my heart went to other songs. But, Laura, the awesome pianist whose autograph I now have (I'll explain in a bit), has a solo in this song! Have her sing more often, guys!
"Sixteen". I was in love with this song when it first came out. Now I hate it because I abused YouTube's replay button.
"Quiet like Sirens"---- one of my favorite Deas Vail songs! As you see, I kinda named this post after it. Deas Vail, you can go on and say, "Oh! That's flattering!" And I'll say, "It's alright, you can't help being awesome, can you?" My only complaint is that the beginning instrumental sounds too similar to "The Right mistakes", another song I love.
I've quoted this song, too, too many times. So I'm not gonna say ANYTHING. Not even gonna mention that I quoted this song in "Autumn is Here". I'm not even gonna say that "summer days are held in a photograph. It's never the same. We can't go back."
"Bad Dreams" reminds me of an old, 1950, ice cream shoppe. Yes, I said ice cream. I was listening to this song on the bus and started dosing off, but to be safe I switched tracks because, well, I didn't want to miss school. This song is great to fall asleep to, but don't get carried away... you don't want to have any bad dreams, do you?
"Wake Up And Sleep" reminds me of Weezer. Am I alone here? Or am I right?
Dearest, this is like, my favorite song on this album! Well, they've got some good songs, so I don't know...
This is probably my favorite song on this album. And is it me, or are the chords in the opening instrumental almost exactly the same as those in "Time" by Hans Zimmer? Either way, both songs are beautiful. I should be able to describe it other way, but the best word I can think of is beautiful. Which, by the way, "beautiful" is such a beautiful word to me. I can't describe it... it's just beautiful. Like the word "love" sends shivers down my spine--- no wonder I bought a shirt that has love's definition on it!
Well, what do you think of Deas Vail's album???? Sweet??? Awesome? Well, if you like those songs, you haven't heard the best of the best Deas Vail songs yet. You just haven't. I was lucky, I received an autographed poster and wristband for being in the first 100 to pre-order the album! And yes, they are legit autographs... I checked.
You have to check out:
And look up "Life in These Little Boats"--- it has a lot of bass in it! You can also check out "Surface" in the blog playlist.
Rock on,
Hope!
These Are the Words That I HATE!
The words I hate:
  1. Critique
  2. Specify (ew! Specify!)
  3. Graphs
  4. Linear (like linear relationships)
  5. Annotation
  6. Evidence
Yeah. There are a few words that I really, really hate. And they are ALL school related. Yes, I said all. Give me a minute to explain.
Critique.
That word just scares me! My art teacher says that word all the time and she uses these hats for what part of the brain you should be using or something like that. Those hats scare me because I always forget what hat stands for what and it's juse one big mess. But anyway, that word "Critique". It sends shivers down my spine. I'm quite a critic, myself, though. Here's something that happened over the summer:
*In Phoenix, Nathan E. does a 'flip' into the deep end of the hotel's swimming pool--- the hotel that Relient K checked into the day after we left! Aw, the sad memory is coming back...*
HOPE: That was a really ugly front tuck, Nathan.
NATHAN: What was wrong with it?
HOPE: You didn't point your toes. AND, your body form was just plain sloppy. PLUS, you can't just flop your arms around, they have to hug your knees. (Is it obvious that I competed in gymnastics?)
*Nathan tries again.*
HOPE: That was great!
*He kinda smiled.*
HOPE: However, you forgot to point your toes.
*He frowned, but kinda laughed, too.*
NATHAN: YOU'RE A CRITIC!!! I'm not a gymnast, Hope! If it's so easy, you do it!
HOPE: No.
NATHAN: CRITIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I guess I'm a critic??? But anyways, the word critique just scares me. If you went to my school and were in my grade, you would know... you would just know.
Specify.
That word scares me because if I try to explain something my hardest, and you say I need to specify, that just stresses me out and it makes me so mad, because I'M TRYING MY HARDEST, PEOPLE! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!! THAT GOES FOR YOU, TOO, VICE-PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS AND MATH MAGICIANS AND SID THE SCIENCE KID (ever heard of him?)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Graphs.
Graphs can make a grown man cry. This I believe because it can make this young woman cry. And women endure more pain than men ever will for quite obvious reasons. Math kills me. I have noticed a pattern. I have a lot of friends who write novels and poems that hate math. You've seen some of my poems like "Yellow Sun" and "From the 105th Floor" on here. And now you know that I hate math and want nothing to do with it for the rest of my life. In college, I am taking the smallest amount of math possible to get my Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Communication and Creative Writing Master (and maybe I'll take some music courses at North Central University, since Drew's brother went there and had a good experience, I think I might go).
Back to that word. Graphs just make me pull my hair out. Ever wanted to cry, but couldn't because you knew you shouldn't and your eyes were too dry anyway? That's what graphs do to me!
Linear relationships, go on and kill me now.
I don't like linear relationships, because for the most part, they are graphs.
Annotation.
I don't believe in annotating. I just don't. It's stating the obvious when the thing is written right there. WASTE OF TIME, I TELL YA! WASTE OF TIME!
Evidence.
My U.S. History teacher is big on this one. "If you have claim, back it up with evidence," He says. And his wife is my Science teacher, so they both say that a lot. I can't, I just can't, back it up with evidence! I stutter, I can't think up a good word to say (not that I cuss or anything bad), and so evidence scares me. I once wanted to be a lawyer and now I know why that will never work for me.
